Lovely War

Lovely War by Julie Berry

What is true love? Even though she is the Greek goddess of love, Aphrodite can only answer that question in the form of stories. On trial for cheating on her Greek god husband Hephaestus with Greek god Ares, Aphrodite makes her case about why she cannot truly be loved. Upon being asked what true love is, she answers with two stories from World War I. They are the tales of Hazel and James along with Colette and Aubrey. With the odds stacked against both couples, it seems unlikely that the four of them will make it out of the Great War alive. With the two boys fighting on the front lines and the girls working to taking care of the new American soldiers, both parties will face fatal situations. As both couples’ stories intertwine, it seems that together they can overcome their odds, and with a little help from the gods, get a chance to live the life they deserve. Wow, what an inspirational book! First of all, this book is unlike anything I have ever read. It is so original and the two major storylines fit so well together that it is evident that a lot of work went into this. I really appreciated the author’s decision to use both mythological fiction and historical fiction, giving the book a realistic and fantastical feel. But second of all, this book really seemed to come to life for me. It was amazing how the author took these characters and their stories and made you feel like you really knew them. Throughout the ups, downs, twists, and turns, it was uplifting to watch these four larger-than-life characters make the best of their situations. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is looking for a read that will change their perspective on what love truly means.

Thank you so much for reading! Like I said above, this book really gave me the opportunity to get to know these characters as my friends, and made me feel like they were real. I loved how it made me reflect on myself, and puzzle out what their type of love looked like for me in my life.
