Dread Nation by Justina Ireland.
The Civil War tore America apart. Hundreds of thousands of Americans died fighting each other. But they say every action comes back to haunt you, and this is brought to life in Dread Nation. Jane McKeene was born just a couple days before all of the soldiers who had died throughout the Civil War became zombies. When she is just a tween, Jane is sent to Miss Prestons’ to begin to learn how to fight the undead. Because she is African-American, Jane’s is destined to grow up and one day serve as an Attendant to keep her hired family safe from the zombies. But not everyone is on Jane’s side. She is betrayed and sent to Summerland, along with her two friends Jack and Katherine. This is the “new” America, where a delusional pastor and sheriff father-and-son duo run the whole town. Out in the middle of nowhere, and facing the threat of death on a daily basis, will Jane and her companions escape successfully? Read the book to find out more!
Oh. My. Goodness. What a insane roller-costar of a book! First of all, what a mind-blowing storyline. Even writing this summary, I am wondering how the author could have come up with this crazy amazing idea! I am definitely here for it. Second of all, this book just kept going and going (in a positive way of course). It seemed like every problem Jane seemed to get out of, five more would pop up in its place. I also loved how strong Jane was as a female protagonist. She was unmatched in her battles against the undead, and I couldn’t help visualizing myself fighting next to her a couple times! As an avid reader and enjoyer of dystopian novels, I thought this one measured up nicely to many others I have read. I also think the combination of dystopian with the historical elements and events worked very nicely together. I thought Ireland did a terrific idea of tying many small details together to form one cohesive picture, and specifically at the end, she brought a couple similarities of the characters and took them to the next level. Overall, I really enjoyed this book, though I was careful not to read it too close to going to bed!
